Avalanche Danger Update

Issued Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 8:00am.  This is a general backcountry (recreational) avalanche advisory for Chugach State Park with the Front Range and South Fork Eagle River areas as the core advisory zones.

*Dangerous Avalanche Conditions*

Dangerous conditions still exist, and are expected to persist through the week.  Warm temperatures, continued strong winds, and the potential for mountain snowfall will keep the danger elevated and possibly increase it further.  Check the prior advisories, recent observations, and weather resources for more information and to better understand current conditions.

Be mindful of the potential for urban avalanches: roof avalanches have killed Alaskans outside of their homes and work places, and can be surprisingly destructive.  Don’t underestimate their dangerous potential.

A North Pole child was recently killed by a roof avalanche, when she stepped outside of her home.
